A prayer for consciousness

May light and love survive

where there goes darkness
where matter's impenetrable touch dissolves
into an unknown sea
where songs and sighs and sweet
protest of seagulls
falls on no more ears
where the scent of humble bodies blows no more
and is blown away
where the wind dies down
where the shadows of the trees
falls short
and falls down
where the earth's skin breaks
where the core aches
where the liquid round the ailing centre dries

may light and love and words and warmth survive
