Elephant in the Room

Elephant in the Room

Darling, I'd like to have that conversation
now. I'd like to take your coat
and sit you down, offer you a glass of table wine
maybe a towel. You can take your shoes off
if you like. I've made sure there's a fire
to warm your heart and concentrate the gaze
for a few hours. I've taken care of dinner

the cats are fed, the plants have all been watered
the dishes done, the kitchen is chemist-clean.
The ironing is dry, thoroughly aired, and folded.
I've swept and mopped the floor, and washed the door
frames down. I've bleached the bathroom tiles
with an industrial disinfectant. I've wiped the windows
to transparency. Of course, I didn't touch a thing

in baby's bedroom. But I'd like to have that conversation now
