Open
letter to a pair of hearts
Whatever
you do you two: play
play
like kittens in the rays of the sun on a warm
day
in May; by the water-butt you bring
the
watering jug you use
to
bring up all your plants/ your herbs legumes and veg
whatever
you do elsewise you must play
with
the words that you use
in
the dance
as
you run round the house chasing cats
affirmative
as Mayflies
in
your still ethereal dresses and kilts clinging to
your
hard vows
to
the trees that you’ll use to make swings
for
what comes
the
little stomp of feet that we all heard
so
fondly on a day
a
day to remind us all of life, in its little heights
its
unignorable issue
let
you both be there to reach for the convenient lights
that
sparkle on the edge of the words
you
will use so carefully some days
but
so cavalierly on others
let
those smiles be fixed forever in the solid air
as
you remember the sound
of
the whoops and whistles in the crowd
the
love and the approval of so many
types
from auditor to poet
to
family, modest proud
remember
the day for its play be it slide or walkway
that
leads to a bridge in the rain
on
a doubled-down day
now
you are two you will never be lonely
alone
you will not be again
ao
song as love reigns
as
long as words stay hovering on this day
so
long as you play
whatever
you do you will stay, close as blades of cool grass
on
a sprinkling day of goodwill, welcome and joy
your
vows marked on the trickling sound
on
the air and unshakeable ground
to
be echoed in eternity
